What Art means to me

Art to me is an expression of emotions, events, feelings and words. As sayings go “a picture is worth a thousand words” but what’s more, an artwork which was created from the heart is priceless. This idea is what I hold in every artwork I do. I pour my heart and soul into each artwork to do my absolute best.

No art is ‘complete’ (as I’ve learnt from my art teacher). Every single piece of artwork can never be perfected; there will always be flaws within an artwork. Even a photo is never flawless. All artworks can be improved; there is nothing such as perfection in the art world. Even Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa has flaws but every change you make will help you learn from your mistakes and bring you one step closer to your goal. If you’ve made a change but it looks worse, congratulations, you’re gained experience on what you shouldn’t do. When I look back to works I have done a year ago, a month ago, a day ago, a second ago, I always find that I can improve it somehow.

Art can’t be classified as ‘bad art’ nor is anything not art. Sure, people’s skills and levels in art differ but as long as each artwork holds emotions, a thought or a feeling, even a stick figure is art. Don’t classify anyone as ‘someone who can never be an artist’, who knows, the person you see as ‘bad’ now, could be ‘good’ in the future. If you believe that what you have created is art, then so it is.

Don’t ever think ‘I’ll never be good at drawing’. Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither were artists. There is always room to complain but there’s more room to improve. If you think you’re bad, practice! There is no one, ever, in the world, with no artistic talent. Can you draw a stick-figure? Yes.Can you write/make strokes on any medium? Yes. You’re an artist. Practice makes perfect but put your heart in everything you draw. If you draw stick figures everyday but half heartedly, you won’t learn from your mistakes. As a Chinese saying goes, “failure is the mother of success” (失败乃成功之母).

What I love about art is that an artwork can change a person’s life. No matter if it’s literacy, paintings or other forms of art, they all change something within you. A brush stroke can tell a story. Even stick figures do! Look back to things you have done in the past and you’ll see how much you have improved. That is why you should never throw away art. They tell a personal tale, that only you will understand, about the progress you have made in life.

p.s. this article is written from a personal point of view and focuses mainly on drawings/literature. Other forms of work are art as well but I feel that I can relate to these 2 forms more. If you have more thoughts on what art is, feel free to drop me a note :D I also don't exactly know which topic this article would go under- any help is appreciated.
